There’s a saying in German to wish someone well: halten Sie eine Handbreite des Wassers unter Ihrem Kiel - keep a hands breadth of water under your keel.

And when you float a 122,000-ton ship out of the shipyard into the tiny river Ems, that saying as you can imagine, comes easily to mind. There really was not much more than a hand’s breadth of clearance. And if it was tight below, it was not much better either side. But let’s begin at the beginning.

The 50-strong press party of VIPs, European and US media was there for the ‘conveyance cruise’ of Celebrity’s newest ship, the Solstice Class, Equinox. The ship was built at the Meyer-Werft shipyard at Papenburg, in north Germany, in the largest covered dry-docks in the world. They’ve been building ships there since 1795 despite the fact they’re 26 miles from the sea. Even in today’s tough economic climate the yard, which is still owned by the founder’s family, has a full order book including more ships for Celebrity.

Being one of only 50 people, including Celebrity’s senior management, on a ship that takes 2,850 makes you feel very privileged. But there was no doubt this was a work in progress. Workmen were everywhere, finishing and snagging. There were cables lying around. Plastic sheeting covered all the carpets, chairs and stairways.

Yet already the ship looks tremendous. Everywhere you look there’s something pleasing, or exceptional, or frankly amazing. We split into small groups for our tour of the ship. The President and CEO of Azamara and Celebrity Cruises, Dan Hanrahan, led our group. (To my mind executives don’t get much more hands on than that!) So what’s Equinox like? She’s magnificent, simply magnificent, from the audacious design concept to the attention to detail.

For example, the cabins are configured in pairs. In one, the layout is balcony, bed, sitting area. Next door it’s balcony, sitting area, bed. Some people may prefer the first, others the second. Most people have no preference because all the cabins are delightful. The cabin layout, of course, didn’t happen by chance - nothing happened by chance on this astonishing vessel. The layouts were designed to give more room in the cabins, and to make it easier for guests to manoeuvre in the room. You’ll soon notice you no longer have a tight squeeze to get past the end of the bed. The layout also enabled Celebrity to get a few more cabins on the ship. Why do the cabin doors open outwards instead of inwards? Each pair of adjacent cabin doors is set back in an alcove from the corridor. If people book adjacent cabins, the alcove can become a private passageway between them. So that’s why! Every day’s a school day, as they say.

Gigantic size can induce tiny doubts. Is she too big? But once you’re on the ship, the overwhelming impression is not of size, but of spaciousness. The walkways are so wide they’re more like boulevards.

Everywhere is open and airy. Nothing is cramped or narrow. How do the lifts cope with the sheer numbers of guests? Embarkation manager, Ken, gives the answer. He told of the research they’d done and the special software programmes they’d installed to govern the high-speed lifts to ensure minimum congestion even at high-traffic times. Next question: my cabin’s 1295 so I’d expect it to be on Deck 12, but it’s on Deck 10. Why?

Because cabin numbers on Deck 10 go from 1001 to 1409. Live and learn. Dumb questions are answered with the same courtesy as smart ones.

Much of the feedback about this and other aspects of the ship comes from the experience of sister ship, Solstice, which entered service last year. ‘How does Equinox compare to Solstice?’ I asked one of the engineers. He said: ‘She’s the same, except she’s younger, and she’s prettier!’

At the evening cocktail party, Bernard Meyer, owner of the shipyard, welcomed us with a gracious speech - in English of course. I remarked afterwards to someone that he seemed very happy. They replied: ‘So would you be if you were getting a cheque for between $700 and $800 million tomorrow!’ Good point.

We dined, bountifully need I say, in the Ocean View buffet restaurant and then assembled on the aft deck to watch the ship make her debut, her entrance into the big wide world. Except it wasn’t a big wide world, but a very, very narrow world. The gap through the dock gate looked impossibly small. And we were due to go through it backwards, in the dark. There was a party mood. Below us, hundreds of camper vans and caravans and crowds of sightseers from all over Germany and Holland were lining the riverbank. The sky was bright with flashbulbs.

It was Oscar night; Hollywood on Sea, except it was on a river. I joked with the man leaning on the rail next to me: ‘This ship will never get through there.’ I went on to explain, glass of wine in hand, that I was good judge of distance and I knew about these things.

He said: ‘Don’t worry, it’ll be okay. The ship is 38 metres wide, the gap is 45 metres. Seven metres clearance, 3.5 metres each side.’ I said: ‘How do you know the exact figures?’ He said: ‘I’m the Captain.’ And he was! Captain Apostolos Bouzakis.

Is it the warm thoughts of sun and sand? Is it the lure of exotic places? Is it the romantic dream of living on the ‘love boat’? Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to work on a cruise ship. However, it is important to have a realistic picture of the life and work onboard. Most land-loving civilians believe that ship life is like a paid vacation. They obviously haven’t worked on a cruise ship before. In a way, ship life is similar to working in the entertainment industry. It seems glamorous and exotic but this can be deceiving.

There are many benefits to working onboard a ship. They include visiting numerous ports of call and learning about the history and customs of our world’s many different cultures. As a crew member, you will sample different foods, experience a simpler way of life and meet a myriad of interesting people. You will achieve independence and gain an adventurous spirit because your eyes will be opened to so many new opportunities and possibilities. Your fellow crew members will become like family to you and you’ll gain friendships with people from all corners of the world. Even though the pay will vary for each position, you will always have free room, food and medical coverage so it is very possible to save money. If your schedule allows, you’ll be able to take free or reduced-rate shore excursions while in port. If your family enjoys cruising, they might even be able to take a discounted cruise within the same line.

However, there is a possibility that at some point during your time aboard you may feel like jumping ship. This is a term used by sailors to describe a deliberate move to break your employment contract. By requesting to leave before your contract is completed or by purposely remaining ashore while the ship sails is asking to forever end your employment with that cruise line. If you ever decide to quit, please realize that this decision could very well mean a permanent end to your cruising life. For that reason, it is important to realize that while ship life can be fun, it certainly isn’t glamorous and should never be taken lightly. Strict maritime laws make for a military-type atmosphere that must be respected at all times. On the ship there is no such thing as a forty-hour work week. You will work seven days a week for months at a time. This is not a job for those that are prone to seasickness because you’ll see many types of weather conditions and it will not be possible to call in sick. If you’re claustrophobic you may want to know that your cabin will likely be small and without a porthole. If you’re someone who needs a lot of privacy you should realize that you’ll likely share a cabin, bathroom and sometimes even a dresser or closet with one or more cabin-mates. 

Even with the lack of privacy, chance of seasickness and strict ship rules, life at sea can be a lot of fun. However, you must keep in mind that not everyone is working onboard for the same reasons. You might be there for the excitement and adventure while your co-worker is there to support a family back home that he or she hasn’t seen for 8 months.  Big difference, isn’t it?

You may have heard stories of poor working and living conditions for some shipboard crew, but unfortunately, the fact remains that Canadians working onboard are given higher paying jobs, shorter contracts and better accommodations than crew from non-industrialized countries. I certainly don’t want to thwart your anticipation of working onboard, but I believe it is important to know the real story. There is a form of racism that is seemingly acceptable onboard a ship. Why is it that while Canadians, Europeans and Americans have preferable accommodations, wages and working conditions, crew from non-industrialized countries are treated otherwise.

The International Trade Workers Federation is a seafarer’s guardian angel. They are an organization committed to changing these injustices and are commended for it. They believe “in a cruise industry regulated by negotiated trade union agreements based on a respect for human rights and a fair wage.”

You may wonder why the citizens of these non-industrialized countries work under such poor conditions. Most of them save every penny to send home, enabling their families to live fairly well by local standards. Others save their money in the hopes of starting a business one day. I think that these crew members are to be admired for their determination and perseverance.

In conclusion, I hope that you weren’t discouraged by the realities of cruise ship living. I believe that while unjust circumstances remain for some, the chance to see the world while living among so many nationalities is a rare opportunity and I urge you to apply because you have the chance to embark on an amazing learning experience and an exhilarating adventure!
